The Secret Garden is a magical story of friendship between an orphaned young girl and the new family and friends she finds when she becomes the ward of her uncle.

I chose this book because it is an excellent example of good children's literature. This is the type of book I would recommend to my students when I become an elementary school librarian.

Competency 4: LS 5013 RSS Feed

For the fourth competency in this course, adding an RSS feed to my blog, I chose the website titled RSS feeds on School Library Journal at www.schoollibraryjournal.com/learnRss. The title of the specific newsletter I chose to subscribe to is School Library Journal-K-8 News at http://feeds.feedburner.com/SchoolLibraryJournal-K-8News. The RSS feed articles can be seen at the right of my blog page.

I chose the School Library Journal website because it has good information that I can use in my future career as a school librarian. I chose to subscribe to the K-8 news because as an elementary school media specialist, I will be working with children in these age groups.

Competency 3: LS 5013 Podcast

For the third competency in this course, finding a podcast, I chose the podcast below because as an elementary school media specialist, I would like to use podcasts such as this one with the children that I will be working with. This podcast, called Storynory, is one that tells children's stories. I think that elementary school children would enjoy listening to podcasts like this one. The actual podcast I chose is the story Jack and the Beanstalk.

I used the search engine Podcast Directory: http://www.podcastdirectory.com/ in my search for this podcast.

The link to this podcast is: http://www.mediafly.com/MediaPlayer/Episode/Jack_and_the_Beanstalk_3

Competency 2: LS 5013 Related Blog

For the second competency in this course, finding a related blog, I chose the article below because I hope to become an elementary school librarian who inspires children to love to read.

I used the search engine www.blogsearchengine.com/ in my search for related blogs.

The link to the blog I used for this assignment is: http://2kidsandtiredbooks.blogspot.com/

Below is an entry from the blog I selected for this assignment (dated Thursday August 21, 2008):

"In school I would always get my work done quickly, so I could read. When I was in the 6th grade, I brought the math book home, did the whole thing and took it back and said, "There, I finished the math book, may I read now?" One day, my teacher called my mom to tell her that I was reading too much in class. My mom was incredulous and said, "You have a child who wants to read and you're complaining about it?" My teacher said that the reading wasn't the issue, but to the other kids, it looked like I wasn't doing my work, even though it was finished. My mom's reply? "Send her to the library." To this day, my favorite elementary school teacher was our librarian!"

Description of blog:

This blog is one written by a woman named Hollie who is an avid reader of all types of books. There are hundreds of book reviews and recommendations on this blog as well as a list of books labled according to type. The entry posted above is what first led me to take a closer look at this blog, and when I did, I discovered just how beneficial this blog will be to me in my work as a school librarian. The reviews and recommendations will prove to be very useful to me in the future.
